Both cover a broad range of product forms, both are available to ASTM and EN standards, and both are used extensively across oil and gas, marine, structural, and chemical processing applications. But they are not interchangeable — and specifying the wrong one carries real engineering and commercial consequences. The fundamental difference comes down to one element: chromium. Carbon steel contains less than 10.5% chromium and corrodes without surface protection.
